Piauí is one of the poorest Brazilian states, occupying 24th place among 27 states on the human development index, the last one in per capita income, and the 5th place in infant mortality. It's also the place where my family comes from and that has filled me with fond memories from childhood visits. For that reason, Piaui's people's simplicity and humanity can not and should not be diminished by numbers, rankings, or preconceptions. This series is an homage to some of the fiercest and noblest people I've ever met.

O Piauí é um dos estados brasileiros mais pobres, ocupando o 24º lugar entre 27 estados no índice de desenvolvimento humano, o último em renda per capita e o 5º lugar em mortalidade infantil. É também o lugar de onde vem minha família e que me encheu de boas lembranças das visitas de infância. Por isso, a simplicidade e a humanidade do povo piauiense não podem e não devem ser diminuídas por números, rankings ou preconceitos. Esta série é uma homenagem a algumas das pessoas mais ferozes e nobres que já conheci.
