The state of Piauí has long faced structural challenges in Brazil’s development charts. In 2010, it ranked 24th of 27 on the Human Development Index and by 2021 it had moved up to 23rd. Its household per-capita income remains below the national average, of about R$ 1,349 in 2024. Infant mortality is still among the country’s highest (about 15 per 1,000 in 2023). But statistics are only one lens.
This series is a tribute to the people of Piauí whose everyday courage, generosity, and quiet brilliance shaped my childhood visits. Their dignity cannot and should not be defined by rankings, statistics and numbers. Rather, it is lived in small acts of kindness, shared tables and open doors. These pictures are an attempt at honoring their humanity.
